Standard & Poor’s Raises Rating on Pakistan’s Mobilink
Mobilink continues to remain exposed to the weak macroeconomic environment, external liquidity position and security situation in Pakistan. However, they expect the recent improvement in macroeconomic environment to result in better operating performance. Also, in the near term, S&P expects Mobilink to face less funding challenges as it is expected to register positive free operating cash flows through significant reduction in capital expenditure and suspension of management fees to Orascom Telecom. Pakistan’s cellular market continues to face intense competition, resulting in lower subscriber numbers and market share for Mobilink. Nevertheless, Mobilink has maintained its No. 1 market share both in terms of subscribers and revenue in Pakistan’s wireless market.
S&P believes parent Orascom Telecom would continue to provide support to Mobilink, if required, considering: (1) the cross-default clause at the parent company in the event of a covenant breach of material subsidiaries, including Mobilink; and (2) Mobilink is the second-largest operation of Orascom Telecom by most financial measures and accounted for 20.6% of the consolidated EBITDA for 2008.
This follows Standard & Poor’s decision to raise the long-term sovereign credit ratings on Pakistan (B-/Stable/C).

US drones to target Taliban in Afghan war
Although defeating the Al-Qaeda terror network remains an overriding goal for Washington, officials now believe the best way to pursue that objective is to ensure stability in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan instead of Al-Qaeda manhunts, the paper said, citing US government and Defense Department officials. It was more important to prevent a slide towards violence and anarchy that could be exploited by Al-Qaeda, which used Afghanistan to stage its attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, the officials said. "We might still be too focused on Bin Laden," an official said. "We should probably reassess our priorities." The shift in priorities for the drone fleet comes despite President Barack Obama's declaration that defeating and dismantling Al-Qaeda is the primary goal of his strategy for the Afghan war. Eight drones that have been devoted to tracking Al-Qaeda in remote Afghan mountains will be transferred to the fight against insurgents, the paper said. And the US Central Command plans to send about 12 more drones to the Afghan front, including some aircraft that have been assigned to Iraq -- a move resisted by US commanders there. The drones are in high demand and the military faces difficult choices in deciding how best to deploy the aircraft which are in short supply. The armed Predators and Reapers can loiter over targets for hours and are viewed as an invaluable resource for both intelligence and military operations. The drones are also used to target Al-Qaeda and the Taliban in neighboring Pakistan though the US government does not publicly discuss those operations. The new commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, has ordered an elaborate review of how the mission uses surveillance aircraft. McChrystal favors using the drones in a more concentrated way instead of spreading the aircraft across the country so regional commands can use the plans for short periods each day. The military also plans to increase the number of flights of U2 spy planes in Afghanistan and all of the Air Force's unmanned Global Hawks -- a much larger plane designed for surveillance -- will be shifted to Afghanistan, officials said. |

Yahoo Gives Serious Searchers a Bag of Note-Taking Tricks

Yahoo has rolled out a beta for a feature designed to meet an unfilled need in online search: automated note-taking. The new Search Pad feature in Yahoo Search automates note taking through a number of functions, such as saving recently visited links. It does not target the search engine user who's looking for a quick answer and is satisfied with the first or second link returned, said Yahoo's Tom Chi. Rather, it is aimed at people who are researching complex issues -- from a car purchase to a course of medical treatment.

More Phones Than Radios In Pakistan
phones are more popular than radios but haven’t taken over TVs yet. This is from research conducted by LIRNEasia, a Sri Lanka-based Asia-Pacific information and communication technology (ICT) policy and regulation capacity-building organisation. The study said that in Pakistan, a hundred bottom of the pyramid (BOP) households now had 68 TVs, 39 phones, 24 radios and 3 computers. As comparison, for a hundred bottom of the pyramid (BOP) households in India, there were 50 TVs, 38 phones, 28 radios and one computer.
This goes against the common held belief that radios were more important for low income households. It also shows that phones can be a great way to educate and help these low income population. The LIRNE Asia blog quotes Richard Heek’s paper (ICT4D 2.0: The Next Phase of Applying ICT for International Development) and I re-quote from the pdf document below.
Finally, some have asked if the Internet should be the focus or if developers should look at where the poor have already “voted with their wallets” and see whether the simpler, cheaper technologies already in use can deliver sufficient ICT functionality to make a difference. Rather than wait for handset and bandwidth upgrades to allow mobile Internet access, we must determine what can be achieved for development through calls and SMS and, possibly, older technologies. Access figures are hard to come by, but we can estimate that something like 80 percent of the population in developing countries has access to a radio, 50 percent to a television.2,3 Early in ICT4D’s history, these statistics prompted the swift reinterpretation of ICT to incorporate radio and television, and foreshadowed the role convergence would play in ICT4D 2.0. Looking at the technologies that already penetrate—mobiles, radios, televisions—developers must now seek ways to add computing and Internet functionality.
Axiotron: Living Comfortably in Apple's Neutral Zone

The deafening buzz over the prospects of an Apple netbook often drowns out the fact that a Mac tablet computer does exist -- although it isn't exactly made by the Infinite Loop crowd. Axiotron, of El Segundo, Calif., has had a tablet notebook based on the Mac platform in the market for two years. As Apple watchers know, the company guards its hardware position with the ferocity of a leopardess protecting a litter, but Axiotron has managed to avoid Apple's wrath by adopting a creative business model.

Has Nokia Been Bitten by the Android Bug?

Nokia is denying rumors that it is about to unveil a smartphone running on Google's Android operating system. "There is no truth to this rumor whatsoever," spokesperson Joseph Gallo told LinuxInsider on Monday. "It is a well-known fact that Symbian is our platform of choice for smartphones." The Guardian newspaper in England reported Monday that the company plans to unveil an Android-based mobile phone in September. If it did, it would join a growing parade of manufacturers rolling out models based on the OS.

The two young women had learned about Jackson's health like so many who get their news nowadays: by reading the ever-flowing feed of real-time information on the microblogging service. Jackson's unexpected death at 50 was just the latest major news event where Twitter played a central

Why does adbrite show adult ads - Other
Here I found same case, A popular Internet Ad service provider company, Adbrite.com
I took adbrite as alternate to Google adsense for my Blog to earn revenue from their ads. And I found adbrite pretty good for my new non popular blog. Then I also introduced Adbrite to my class fellow who were also new to blogging world. They all liked adbrite and they also preferred adbrite for their blogs instead of google adsense.
Time passed, I never noticed much what adbrite is showing in my blog in their Ads, but one of my friend started telling me that adbrite is providing adult ads too on his friend and family blog, where it was given on adbrite site and their policy they do not provide adult ads. First I ignored my friend, but later after few days I also started noticing that adbrite has really started increasing their number of adult ads or semi nude photo ads with photos kissing guys girls etc. Which was a bad thing for me because my blog was being viewed by my family friends and teachers. I complained to adbrite team but got no response which assured that they do agree to provide adult ads even with providing their big bold lines on their site that they will never provide adult ads.
After that I and my all class fellows changed our minds and we are going to remove adbrite sooner from our blogs, We will try another alternate service provider.
Here below I am attaching some screenshots which are showing promises of adbrite.com

It also includes easy publishing options so that you can easily share your creation with others.
After installing the software, you can begin recording in just a few steps. Click the record button and the recording will start. You can choose to capture the entire desktop, a specific window or a framed region. After the recording is complete, you can review it and make changes. The Troublesome Task of Rejiggering the Keyboard

Lenovo put nearly a year of research into two design changes that debuted on an updated ThinkPad laptop this week. No, not the thinner, lighter form or the textured touchpad -- rather, the extra-large "Delete" and "Escape" keys. It may seem like a small change, but David Hill, vice president of corporate identity and design at Lenovo, points out, "Any time you start messing around with the keyboard, people get nervous." Computers get smaller and faster every year, but keyboard design remains largely stuck in the 19th century.
Telematics In Pakistan

This is an introductory post on the topic of Telematics and how it could be used in Pakistan. Telematics refers to the convergence of telecommunications and information processing in the context of automobiles. Services which are enabled by telematics include safety and security (get help after a crash, ask for help with a dead battery, stolen car alert), convenience (traffic alerts, find an address, remotely unlock a door) and other (download content to car, book a hotel room). Telematics used to be offered by expensive car makers but it is now becoming mainstream rapidly.
Lets take a look at what components and technologies are involved in building a telematics solution.
Hardware - TCU (Telematics Control Unit) - a box which is placed in the car and has GPS
Connectivity for voice (call center) and data (GSM or CDMA for sms and TCP/IP data)
Software (server-side platform which manages the entire solution)
Services and applications (e.g. speech recognition, POI data, call center)
Overall building a telematics solution is very much like a systems integration work. From connecting the hardware to data centers, managing the wireless data and voice, providing the information to a specialized call center and coordinating the response with different types of providers (emergency, police, roadside assistance, insurance etc). Protocols are defined to communicate between different components and to handle messages in SMS format or to handle packet data.
Most common scenario of telematics is when a car is in accident. Modern TCUs can sense the crash and send the data automatically to the system, alerting a call center about the crash severity and the location. Emergency help can thus be sent. Other scenario is when a person gets stranded on a road and needs help, then the SOS button in the car is pushed and a call is initiated to the call center from the car. Of course a wireless signal is needed for the TCU to dial out. Similarly a call center can call back the car.
Fleet tracking (commercial vehicles - taxis, buses, company vans, trucks etc) is another big area where the cost of telematics is justified because of business advantages.
In developing countries, services such as stolen vehicle alert and location could be useful. Since a vast majority of the cars do not come with the hardware, retrofitting of cars with TCU/GPS units will be most common. Once there is connectivity and a way to send data over the air, many different solutions can be built. You can have a geo-fence application which can alert you if your car moves out of a certain radius. Parents can track the movement of the car when their kids are driving. Of course the modern cars have many sensor built into the car so one can imagine all kinds of automobile data being sent over the air. Vehicle data can be used for troubleshooting, diagnostics and maintenance alerts.
In Pakistan there are a few companies and groups working on telematics (perhaps as distributors of foreign hardware makers) but the market is not ready for massive adoption - most probably due to hardware cost, complexity of building solutions and the limited number of people who are willing to pay for such service. It usually takes the car makers a few years to plan out a complete telematics solution so we might see something in the next 2-3 years in limited models. At least a good and affrodable telecom and wirless infrastructure is in place in Pakistan to support the telematics services. There is plenty of activity in this area in India.
